During the 1830's in Australia, both skilled and unskilled workers were in great demand. Many family groups, as well as single men and women, had been encouraged to immigrate. These immigrants formed the majority of settlers in Eastern Australia in the 1840s. Financial assistance was given by the government, by church groups, and by landholders and businessmen, often acting through agents.
